Abstract
The European Solar Telescope (EST) is a project aimed at the design, construction and operation the biggest solar telescope ever built in Europe. With a primary 4-metre mirror, and with a chosen location at the Canary Islands Observatories, it will triple the capacity of today’s largest solar telescopes operating in Europe. EST is an initiative promoted by the European Association for Solar Telescopes (EAST), an organisation that brings together 24 institutions spread across 18 European countries, aiming to ensure access of European solar astronomers to world-class high-resolution ground-based observing facilities”. In 2019, the University of Coimbra was invited to be EAST member. Since then, we are looking for the possibilities of Portugal to be part of EST, taking into account that this is a very good opportunity for both national science and space industry. This talk aims to present EST project and to discuss with the audience the possible involvement of Portugal.
