Abstract
In an introduction to the basic tenets of gauge formulation of gravity, it will be clarified how General Relativity can be understood as a simple gauge theory of the translational symmetry. The discussion will by proceed by incorporating further symmetries into the theory, with focus on the physical interpretation. There will probably be some surprises on the way to the conclusion, which is a conjecture that the assumption of the equivalence principle, together with an elementary notion of causality, suffices to predict not only the theory of gravitation but also, in a unified fashion, the particle physics
