Abstract
MEGARA (Multi-Espectrógrafo en GTC de Alta Resolución para Astronomía) is the new high-throughput intermediate-resolution (R=6000-20000) optical Integral-Field Unit and Multi-Object Spectrograph for the 10.4m GTC telescope. In this talk I will describe the characteristics of the instrument and its construction and AIV status along with its main scientific drivers. These include the study Galactic nebulae and low-mass stars in stellar clusters, resolved (w. MOS) and unresolved (w. IFU) stellar populations in nearby galaxies, and galaxy evolution in general. MEGARA will be delivered to GTC at the end of this year and will see first light in Spring 2017.
