Abstract
Large astronomical observing facilities are increasing. Oversubscription factors range from 5-10. Local and far universe science groups are in tough competition for observing time. Writing an effective proposal is ever more important. Good science alone is insufficient, rather, good writing and selling has become the norm of the game. Optical and infrared astronomical facilities require that the proposer has in-depth knowledge of the instrument, while a facility such as ALMA require trivial preparation. I shall deliberate classic guidelines to effective writing, discuss preparation methods, strategies of pressure factors and LST oversubscriptions. These tips will aid writing an effective observing proposal, be it for an optical or radio, space or ground based facility.
