Abstract
First we shall discuss the consistency of general classes of extended theories of gravity with non-minimal couplings governed by the contraction of the Ricci tensor with the energy-momentum tensor. We provide a general framework and show that the conformal and non-minimal couplings to the matter fields usually lead to higher-order equations of motion and put severe constraints whenever the fluids are represented, for instance, by either a canonical scalar field or a massive vector field. Then we shall illustrate the recent line of research in order to study CMB perturbations in the frame of modified gravity theories illustrating the procedure for a general class of f(R) theories.
