Abstract
In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview of the Instrument Control Software architecture designed for the ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph (ANDES), developed as part of the preparation for the instrument’s Preliminary Design Review (PDR). The ANDES Control Software is based on the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Instrument Control System Framework (IFW1). In this manuscript we focus on the architectural choices required to fully support the operation of a highly distributed instrument such as ANDES for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). We describe the strategies foreseen for the design, development, and deployment of both the low-level control software, dedicated to hardware and device management, and the high level control software, responsible for coordinating the observations. Furthermore, we detail how the different detectors will be controlled.
