Abstract
Herschel and Planck were designed as state-of-the-art space missions to probe a wide spectral region of the invisible Universe. They are expected to operate a 'small revolution' in our understanding of how stars and galaxies form as well as how the Universe originated and evolved. In this talk I will present an overview of these missions, emphasizing scientific objectives, instruments, contributors and mission profiles.
