Abstract
In the context of the International Year of Astronomy, CAUP is conducting a study to ascertain the degree of scientific literacy of portuguese students (in particular astronomy). This is based on multiple-choice 20-question quizzes that students are asked to fill in a limited time. At the time of writing, around 3000 have done so. The study also contrasts our results with the national curriculum standards in the relevant areas and searches for any factors that might affect student performance, including gender geographic/economic or environmental (the national school rankings being a proxy for the latter). We will present preliminary results of the study, focusing on the results of the U. Porto students who recently took both the astronomy test and the general scientific literacy one. We will also announce which students had the best results (and present them with their prizes, if they happen to be in the room).
