PoET Workshop #223-25 October 2024, Porto, Portugal The quest for earth-like planets orbiting other suns is challenged by our lack of understanding about the sources of astrophysical “noise”. To approach this problem, we are building a dedicated facility: the Paranal solar Espresso Telescope (PoET). This telescope will be linked to the ESPRESSO spectrograph (ESO), allowing to acquire simultaneously disk-integrated (sun-as-a-star) and arcsecond level disk-resolved observations of the Sun at a spectral resolution R~200 000. The main scientific motivation behind PoET is tackle the problem of "stellar noise" in high-resolution spectroscopy observations: both in precise radial velocities and in transmission/emission spectroscopy. PoET will further contribute to other science cases, including solar and stellar physics.
Following the success of the 1st PoET workshop in 2023, we are now organising a second event. The main goal of this 2.5-day workshop is to:
- Present an update of the PoET project, including the final design and specifications, schedule, and operations;
- Discuss the science of PoET and prepare the observation plan, having in mind the impact of the data on exoplanet research, solar physics, and other relevant domains;
- Present the data policy and collaboration agreement.
Attendance to this workshop is limited to ~50 participants, and is by invitation only. In case you are interested in joining, please
