Abstract
We discuss a number of results on metric-affine theories of gravity obtained during the last few years. These theories are defined by the removal of any a priori constraint between metric and affine structures, and arise within the macroscopic description of ordered structures with defects in solid state physics. As a result, they generically yield ghost-free and second-order equations of motion that reduce in vacuum to GR. In this talk we will introduce (some of) the phenomenology of (some of) these theories (f(R), quadratic, Born-Infeld gravity) regarding wormholes and their dynamical generation, (2+1) dimensional BTZ-like solutions, and scalar fields.
