1 Post Doctoral Research Fellowship(s) (BIPD) is(are) open at the FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, for the project/R&D institution Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço, UIDB/04434/2020, financed by national funds by FCT / MCTES (PIDDAC) under the programme Strategic Programme, under the following conditions:
1. Scientific Area: Optical Astronomical Instrumentation
2. Requirements for admission: The applicant must have completed a PhD degree and that degree must have been obtained within the three years prior to the date of submission of this application. Only applications from candidates having background in Optical Astronomical Instrumentation will be considered.
3. Additional optional skills and qualifications: Experience in the development of optical systems for astronomy and strong background on astrophysics.
4. Contracting requirements: Presentation of the academic qualifications and/or diplomas.
5. Work plan: The successful candidate is expected to be part of the instrumentation team responsible for the Front End of the ESO Extremely Large Telescope high resolution spectrograph instrument (HIRES). The candidate will be responsible to follow all the top level astrophysics requirements that define the specifications of the Front End. He will also participate in the design of the Front End on the Instrument, namely on the optical setup and definition of all the interfaces with the other instrument subsystems. He will also support all the project management and system engineering activities. Being part of the IA's Instrumentation team, he will also support all the strategic projects for both ESO (European Southern Observatory) and ESA (European Space Agency) in what concerns the interaction with the astronomical observations and their implications on the engineering design of the instruments. The main goal is to accomplish the Preliminary Design of the HIRES instrument that is due in the end of 2023 and to prepare all the requirements and specifications driven from that milestone to the following Final Design of the Instrument.
6. Legislation framework: Research Fellowship Holder Statute, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, in its current version and the FCT Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships, in its current version (Reg. 950/2019 published in DR on 16th December:

7. Place of work: The work will be developed at the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences in the Physics Department of FCUL Campo Grande under the scientific supervision of Professor Alexandre Pereira Cabral.
8. Fellowship duration: This position is initially opened for 6 months and will begin on August 2021. The fellowship contract may be potentially renewed for additional 30 months, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation of Research Fellowships from the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.
9. Monthly allowance: The fellowship amounts to € 1646 ,according to
table values of the fellowships awarded directly by the FCT, IP. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, if not covered by any other social protection scheme, pursuant to Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social.
The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer.
10. Evaluation and selection process: Candidates will be assessed by the quality of their CV 40% and adequacy of CV and candidate profile to the work plan 50% and motivation letter 10%. An interview will be done with the top 3 ranked candidate. The final grade will consider 75% of the previous grade and 25 percent of the interview.
11. Selection Committee: the composition of the jury: Alexandre Cabral (President of the jury), Manuel Abreu and José Afonso (members) and João Coelho (alternate member)
12. Publication/notification of results: All the candidates will be notified by e-mail, sent by the call holder, with the selection meeting minutes enclosed.

15. Time limits for the appeal procedure: In case of negative decision, the candidates have 10 business days, after the date of announcement of the results of the candidates evaluation, to pronounce their disagreement in accordance with the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. Appeals against the final decision may be submitted to the Administration Board of FCiências.ID (fciencias.id@fciencias-id.pt) within 15 business days after the notification date
Note 1: The documents that prove the entitlement of the academic qualifications and diplomas, or the proof of registration in the academic degree or diploma requested on the call, can be dismissed during the application period and replaced by a declaration on their honour from the applicant. Their delivery is mandatory during the fellowship contractualization. If not requested in the requirements for admission, the proof of registration in the academic course requested on the call is mandatory for contract signature.
