IA, as part of the national scientific and technological system, is periodically evaluated by national and international panels under the coordination of the Ministry for Science, Technology and Higher Education. In the most recent evaluation exercise (2014), IA was ranked as Excellent and referred to as "the most important research institution in the field of Astronomy and Space Sciences in Portugal" by the international evaluation panel.
